Getting a tree out of a Cairns block safely

When a tree has to come out

Most removals in Cairns fall into a handful of categories. The tree is dead or dying and the next big wind will drop it. It has been split, barber-chaired or half-uprooted by a storm and cannot be left. Its roots are into a slab, a driveway, a sewer line or a retaining wall. It is a declared or environmental weed — African tulip and cocos palm are the usual suspects — and pruning only delays the problem. Or the block is being built on and the tree is in the footprint.

There is also the honest fourth option: the tree is fine and does not need to go. A crown that has grown dense over a wet season can often be thinned and deadwooded instead, which costs less and keeps the shade. Anyone who quotes a removal without first looking at whether a prune would do the job is selling you the bigger ticket.

How the work actually runs

A quote is done on site, because the tree is only half the question. The rest is access: how close a truck and chipper can get, whether there is a side gate wide enough for a stump grinder, what sits under the drop zone, and how soft the ground is. Cairns blocks vary wildly — a flat Earlville yard with rear lane access is a completely different job to a Redlynch property on a slope with a rainforest gully behind it.

From there the tree is either felled whole where there is room, or climbed and dismantled in sections with limbs roped and lowered where there is not. Over a colorbond roof, a pool, a shed or a neighbour's fence, everything is lowered. For big removals in tight spots a crane or an elevated work platform is brought in, which costs more but is usually still cheaper than repairing what a dropped limb does to a roof.

Timber is chipped, rounds are cut and loaded, and the area is raked off. If you want the mulch for garden beds or the larger rounds kept, say so at the quote — leaving material on site generally reduces the price.

The council question

Not every tree can simply be removed. Cairns Regional Council regulates vegetation through the CairnsPlan planning scheme, and lots carrying vegetation management, biodiversity or waterway overlays have restrictions on clearing. Trees on the verge belong to council regardless of who has been watering them. Trees in body corporate common property need the body corporate's approval. Where a tree straddles a boundary, the Queensland Neighbourhood Disputes (Dividing Fences and Trees) Act 2011 decides who is responsible for what.
